Let Them Breathe

Let Them Breathe

“Let Them Breathe” was an immediate reaction to the death of George Floyd and two other black lives lost to the hands of police within a week. The protests that erupted and the overwhelming outcry prompted me to do something, other than screaming or posting angry words. Each of the black stones commemorates the individual lives of black men, women and children, each one unique with a family and a story, whose life was senselessly and unjustly lost to police violence. The undulating substrate breathes, inhaling and exhaling, with a flag-like wave. I took the time to count each tessera, because each individual one does matter. Collectively, the 2829 tesserae represent the deeper problem in America, the metaphor effectively captured and expressed in mosaic, being the sum of its parts. The proceeds from the sale of this piece is going to the Black Lives Matter movement. I honestly can’t justify gaining at the expense and loss of others.
