Dating back to the mid-nineteenth century, Orsoni is well-known for its production of smalti and gold smalti. It is located in the Cannareggio district of Venice, Italy, where I studied in 2006 and 2008. Their gold smalti is made by placing a sheet of 24kt gold leaf between two sheets of glass. The top layer is very thin and transparent or colored (to obtain the different gold colors) whereas the base is much thicker. I love using this gold in my mosaics to render the effects of light.
